Lunch Box Love

The best way to encourage children to eat is by making food fun, and what better way to do that than to provide a themed lunch!

In the past I've created spooky Halloween food and seaside scenes but on a regular basis I use cookie cutters to shape sandwiches and make meals more appealing.

After a lovely weekend away in Norfolk at Feather Down Farm I decided to theme the Mini Mes' lunches around our trip.

I used cutters to shape the cheese and chorizo filled sandwiches into:
  • Horses that we had groomed,
  • Eggs that we were able to collect each morning from the chickens,
  • Flowers that were in the nearby fields,
  • Rabbits that were hiding in the bushes next to our tent,
  • Ice creams that we had enjoyed at the beach.

The Walkers Hoops and Crosses represent the games that we played in the evening before bed and the circular cheese biscuits represent the outdoor games we played with balls.
The marshmallows bring back memories of the wood burning stove and the apples are what we were able to feed the animals.

We had a great trip and making a themed lunch based around this brings back memories of the time we had. The Mini Mes can think about the holiday even though they are back at school!

How do you encourage your child to eat?

This is our entry into the Tots100 #HoopsandCrosses competition.

  1. I keep meaning to try cutting my son's sandwiches into shapes as he's not a big fan of them - thank you for the reminder! I find the best way to encourage him to eat is to all sit down as a family to eat and eat the same food, felt like a chore when we first started doing it but now I love it!

  4. We eat as a family as much as possible and get both our girls involved in making what we are going to eat. We try to make food as fun as possible but I have never thought to use cookie cutters for sandwiches, which is something I shall start doing. Thanks for the tip

  5. What great lunch box ideas, my daughters would love those!

My eldest daughter is quite a fussy eater but we have found that by getting her involved in making the meals she is more inclined to eat them. They also have their own vegetable plots and are very keen to eat what they have grown.

  6. I use cutters for my youngest sons sandwiches for some reason he will only eat them when they have been cut into a fun shape!
