Girls And Education: Why Education For Girls Is So Important

We all know that education is one of the most important factors in improving the life chances of children. But for many around the world access to education is limited or non-existent, and often this is based on factors such as family wealth, whether they live in urban or rural areas, their ethnicity and their gender.

Sadly, when it comes to girls and education the statistics are worrying to say the least. Worldwide 1 in 5 girls are denied an education. In Africa as a whole about 43% of girls are in lower secondary education, and in certain countries and regions these numbers are much worse.

What many people don’t realise is that educating girls has an enormous impact on more than the individual. If a girl is educated, even just to primary school level, it has stunning implications for their
children, community, wider society and future generations in a way that is less pronounced with boys. Here are some eye-opening examples.

Girls And Education: Positive Impacts For The Girl

The first major impact is on the girl herself. In countries where girls and education part ways early on the reasons tend to be based on gender discrimination and a belief that education is not important for women due to their role performing domestic work and child rearing. However educating a girl has the following positive benefits for the girl:

  • A girl who is educated is less likely to be a victim of forced and early marriage and less likely to be a child mother
  • She is more likely to be literate, understand healthcare and as a result is more likely to live longer and be healthier
  • She will have fewer children. Research shows that for every 4 years of education a woman will have one less child
  • And educated girl will have better levels of sexual health, and a massively reduced chance of contracting HIV
  • A girl who has been educated will be more likely to find employment and see her potential earning increase. One study found that just one extra year of primary education boosts a girls’ earning potential by 15-25%, a much greater return than the equivalent for boys

Girls And Education: The Benefits For Their Children

A girl’s education also has important benefits for her children, such as:

  • Children of mothers with a primary school education are 40% more likely to survive beyond the age of five
  • Girls education has been proven time and again to have a large impact on school enrolment of their children, much more so than the father’s level of education
  • Women in poorer countries will reinvest about 90% of their earned income back into their family (compared to about 30-40% by men), their children will enjoy a more comfortable and secure life

And these positive benefits then ripple down through the generations improving the situation for the future.

The correlation between prosperity, girls and education is strong and undeniable. That’s why education for girls is so important, especially in poor nations where they can make enormous contributions to society on so many levels.

By building and equipping schools, training teachers, delivering vocational training and working to change attitudes towards access to education for girls change is possible.
