“Where to Put It All?” - Computer Storage Options

In this data-driven day and age, finding a computer with sufficient storage is a nightmare. Family holiday photographs, backups, music, films, files and who knows what seem to cause your computer to fill up within just a couple of months of use.

Luckily, there are some solutions to the problem. Below are some of the options for extra computer storage for you and your family.

External hard drives
The internal hard disk drive stores information files like photos, videos, documents and music. When your computer's hard drive is running low on space, you can buy an external hard drive which plugs into your computer and can store extra files, along with a backup of the computer's files too. This is also really useful if you need to quickly transport files from one computer to another.

They're also really easy to install: usually all you need to do is plug it into the computer and plug in the power cord if your new hard drive has one. Sometimes you might need to install software, but
many hard drives now do this automatically.

Solid state drive
Solid state drives (SSDs) work similarly to the external hard drive, but they have no moving parts. This makes them more robust, quieter, and more efficient. They're still quite expensive as they're a relatively new addition to the market. That said, they’re a good option if you're looking for lots of storage and something very reliable.

USB flash drives
These are like a smaller version of an external hard drive, and are often very portable which is ideal for transferring files from one computer to the next. Their capacity isn’t as large as that of an external drive, so they're more suitable for transfer than storage.

Cloud storage
Like sending an email to yourself, cloud storage is putting your files online where you can access them from anywhere with an internet connection. This is generally reliable and convenient, but the drawbacks are that once you need to store over a certain amount of files, you’ll have to pay a monthly subscription fee. It can soon add up.

Extra hard drives
If your internal hard drive is still insufficient, you might consider completely replacing the hard drive with a higher capacity version. This is usually a bit cheaper than an external hard drive of the same capacity, and you don't have to worry about carrying around an external hard drive. The drawback to this is that the process will involve taking your computer to pieces!

Technology is moving quickly and files are getting larger, so storage options are developing to keep up! With so many storage options, you're bound to find the ideal way to store your extra files in the most convenient manner for you and your family.

Where do you store files?
Have you ever lost anything important by not backing it up?

  1. I really like the idea of Cloud Storage. I definitely need to do something soon as I'm running out of space and I'm worried if I ever lost my lap top I'd be in a world of trouble!

  4. I lost loads of my son's baby photos so my photos are stored in so many places. Online is also a good place - photobucket etc and why I don't mind my kids being online. I have an external hard drive for the majority.
