  2. I was about 6 or 7 and I learned at primary school during our swimming lessons. My tip is to start taking your babies to the swimming baths from a young age. As soon as mine had had their first immunisations, I took them in the pool at our local pool. Often pools run aqua baby classes for parents to attend with their babies!

  3. I was about 14 when I learnt to swim. At my primary school we didn't have lessons and it's not something my parents could afford to pay for outside of school
    My boys are 4 and 2 and can't swim yet.

    i've been swimming as long as i can remember. Have always loved the water and i'm still more comfortable in the pool than out! My oldest is 4 and can swim by herself (with armbands ofcourse) and little one will start splashing soon!

    I learnt to swim at school when I was 4, but we took my little man to swimming lessons when he was 8 weeks old. He now loves the water & splashes happily

  22. I'm rubbish at swimming and really don't want this to rub off on my twin boys that are 2, so we visit the pool often and i give them lots of encouragement and we do lots of splashing. I hope in the long run this will gain them some confidence in the pool to swim well x

  25. I cant remember how old I was but I think it was just before I started swimming lessons at school. My dad was determined to teach me to swim so the trainers didn't have to, lol. I never quite got to the stage of diving under water to collect the bricks though :(
    I took my son once and he hated it, I don't think he felt very safe despite wearing armbands. I am determined to help him get over his fear and teach him to swim so this would come in very handy xx

    I took my daughter swimming from 6 weeks , just after she had her injections, she even did a sponsored swim for the British Heart foundation BEFORE she could even walk and made the front page of the local paper!

  32. I can't remember the exact age but it was around 5/6 years old. I think it depend on your child to how old they should be, our 5 year old is learning at the moment, he was not a fan of the swimming pool up until about 18 months ago but our 6 month old son absolutely loves going and having a splash around.

  37. I was at secondary school so i would say around aged 14.Now i take my granddaughter Bonnie swimming with her mum & dad,she is 8 months old & loves it. I would say if you have children take them swimming at a young age,I wish i had been introduced to it way before i was.

  51. My top tips for learning to swim would be to take your children swimming from babies, The more often you go the more confident they will feel in the water. If you choose to help them learn yourself remember to stay calm and relax they will pick it up in there own time.

  73. I was about 3/4. By the time I was ready for the "big" pool I was throwing myself in the deep end. Luckily I never came to harm. Mum used to say "Wait for me or Dad" but by the time they had come out of the changing room I was swimming about in the 6ft 6 end. :)

It was so long ago I can't remember the exact age I learnt to swim but was probably around 3 when I started to flounder in the water but had lessons with the school class when I was about 8 years old. Those were the days when the swimming pool was outside and not heated so sometimes the water was very cold to get into but it didn't bother us - we just wanted to swim like our older brothers & sisters...lol So pleased I did persevere because this last week we were in a hotel in Scotland where they had a swimming pool (heated) - it was lovely to have a swim whilst it was very cold outside.

  84. I learnt from an early age, I'm sure I started swimming lessons when I was 4 or 5 and both of my oldest started lessons as soon as they could, which was aged 3 at our local pool! Now aged 5 and 7 they are both confident swimmers. My toddlers is nearly two and she loves splashing! She will start lessons from 3 too

  108. I was about 5 or 6 when I learned at Butlins. Lessons every day for a week did the trick for me and both my boys. Their Dad taught them when we were on holiday & they were in the pool each day

  117. as a parent i had my gold survival and was confident my daughter would swim and it was hard work 7 and Tara could swim doggy fashion without armbands but as an older mum forgot how cold and awful it was teaching her - I was freezing for a lot of years AWFUL x
