The Ultimate Baby Proofing Check List for Mums-To-Be

Welcoming a new baby to the world, and to your home, can be a daunting prospect. You have to think of so many things, not to mention all of those sharp corners and choking hazards that seem to suddenly appear. As a new-mum this baby-proofing checklist can help make sure your home is ready for you and your baby.

In the bathroom

The bathroom is a great place to bond with your baby, but it is not without its dangers. It goes without mentioning that you should never leave your baby unsupervised in, or near, the water, but you should also consider:

  • A non-slip mat: these are especially handy once your baby wants to start standing up.
  • Soft covers for taps.
  • Bath seat for your baby
  • Making sure any medicine cabinets or either locked or out of reach.

In the Kitchen

In order to make sure your baby or toddler-to- be doesn’t hurt himself or herself in the kitchen, you may want to think about the following:

  • Do not leave hot food at the edge of the table.
  • Avoid hot drinks when holding your baby.
  • Always turn pots and pans away from curious hands.
  • Child cupboard locks, especially ones containing cleaning products or other chemicals that could end up in your baby’s mouth.

The kitchen is also full of sharp corners from worktops and dining tables, so consider investing in corner guards to protect your hyperactive toddler. Any furniture around knee height or below is at risk of being run into by your child.

In the bedroom

Although a peaceful place, your baby’s bedroom or nursery also needs baby proofing, including their cot. To do this:

  • Avoid heavy or fluffy bedding, as this could obstruct your baby or cause them to overheat.
  • Do not leave toys in crib when baby is sleeping.
  • If you have a feline friend, consider putting a cat net over your baby’s cot.
  • Use window guards to prevent an accident.
  • Make sure toys are put out of harm’s way, and are not damaged so they do not become choking hazards.

Like in the bathroom, you should never leave your baby unsupervised on a bed, and it is advisable to change your baby’s nappy on the floor to prevent the risk of a fall.

In the Living room

The living room is arguably where families spend most of their time, so be sure to make this room a safe-haven for your baby.

  • Hide electrical cords that hang from appliances. Your baby is likely to pull at them, which may cause heavy objects to fall on your baby such as lamps, or irons.
  • Secure any furniture that can topple, like TV sets, bookcases or chest of drawers
  • Cover up plug sockets, to keep them safe from little fingers.
  • If your home has a fireplace, then by law you must have a fireguard.

It’s also a good idea to install a baby gate on the stairs, and fit and test your fire alarms regularly. Of course, we are only human and can’t be sure to baby-proof EVERYTHING- always have a child’s first-aid kit at hand, full of things like plasters, bandages and disinfectant, for those little scrapes and falls that are a part of growing up.

Have you got anything to add to the list?
