Days Out With A Difference

The summer holidays are fast approaching and if you aren't jetting off for some sun, sea and sand you may wish to book a few days out nearer to home for entertainment. These fun and quirky ideas might be just the thing you're looking for!

The Abbey Pumping Station is the museum of technology and science in Leicester and it has some rather interesting exhibits! Apart from the restored Beam engines, steam shovel and narrow gauge railway you can also explore the history of bodily waste. That's right, there is a talking toilet, Victorian loos and Roman water pipes. The transparent bowel and cistern allow you to follow the journey of poo - the kids are going to love this one!

With over 800 figures in a picturesque woodland setting, the opportunity to decorate your own and a little tea room for treats, Gnome Magic is an unusual yet low cost attraction. There is a relaxing atmosphere as you take a stroll in the gardens but keep your eyes open for the terrapins and snakes! They may be slithering around the natural ponds along with the ducks.

Cumbria's Pencil Museum has something for everyone from the latest exhibition which educates you on the secret gadget pencil that was created, the world's largest coloured version and plenty of workshops. You can save your home from getting messy by popping along to the art studio where you can get creative and then complete the activity trail before picking up your personalised pencils. They even have drawing templates to download which includes dinosaurs and Egyptians.

Holders of two Guinness world record certificates and established over 10 years ago, Teapot Island has more than 6700 teapots on display. That's quite impressive! With everything from the Daleks and motorcycles to the queen and Minnie Mouse it will captivate both the young and old. There is even a 3 meter high wishing well to raise funds for the Air Ambulance and freshly prepared cream teas each day which makes a visit even more tempting.

Pop on a P&O ferry and enjoy a day away. Whether the war museums in Calais, amazing street art or an exciting trip to Disneyland Paris is most appealing you can have an unforgettable mini break. The boat experience itself is often a  adventure in itself for the kids where you can pick up goodies in duty free along the way. There really is so much to see and do in France and it's only a stones throw away.

What is your favourite attraction?
