The Funny Things Kids Say and Do - Tween Attitude

Children are often pushing boundaries and seeing just how far they can go before parents pop from pure frustration, and this is the same with the Mini Mes. Generally there is very little conflict in our household, which is just how it should be, but with Minxy turning into a teen (how is she nearly 13 already?!) hormones can certainly hit hard at times and cause a few minor issues.

Life isn't perfect and my stress levels do sometimes increase...

When out recently purchasing new school shoes, the Mini Mes had asked if we could have dinner at a nearby restaurant. I must admit that a night away from the oven and dishwasher was rather tempting, along with the salad bar, so we agreed but made sure that they both knew we would be having the pulled pork I had planned for that evening the following lunch instead.

The next day came and when I served up the BBQ coated meat in buns, teamed with homemade fries and corn on the cob, Minxy's face turned sour. She decided that she suddenly hated this dish, for no apparent reason, and she stated that she would rather go to her room instead of eating what I had prepared - for 6 hours in the slow cooker I shall add. We gave her a few chances to finish her meal, even mentioning that there was Ben & Jerry's for dessert for encouragement, but she declined and skulked off upstairs while shouting how *insert a variety of negative words* it was and how I must hate her for serving it *insert eye roll*.

The Mr then finished her food, not wanting anything to go to waste, and I think out of sympathy for me after the insults at my cooking, before eating her ice cream. Once Minxy realised the Cookie Dough pot was gone my phone alerted me of a message...

  and another...

I don't think she was impressed that there was no pudding left for her but I did find her insults quite amusing, as did the Mr!

Have you had conflict at the dinner table too?

  1. Oh I had to laugh at the insults - the Gremlin one was so funny! Kids are both hilarious and frustrating at the same time sometimes!

  6. I once bought a stew to the table and my daughter said it looked like poo, sigh! It always amazes me that something they once loved is now something they hate.

  10. I've learnt not to take the 'I don't like this' too seriously with food unless it is something they've never tried before. I think it's their way of always getting their favourite foods!

EM -word of advice from a mum whose teenagers left nest now, just accept everything you do and say is wrong, then you will have a less conflicted life for the next few years, wine helps too!

  33. My son is 14 but has always been really good at trying everything although brussel sprouts still remain a no-go. If he goes off anything Hubby (who does the cooking)usual adapts it to encourage him to like it again. My son knows he will go hungry if he won't eat what is prepared & to date (touch wood!) has never refused to eat. He does send me memes though & texts which I find as funny as your gremlins one.

  39. Don't have any teens yet and my great-niece and great-nephew are nearly 5, and 2 and a half. But they are funny at meal-times. They like just about anything (apart from cabbage - PLEASE DO NOT FEED THEM CABBAGE - or Gremlins will appear). But they like "rawberries" - that's any food they can eat straight away, without it being cooked (they know what the "proper" name for the food item is and will use it outside their house and ours). Oh and Phoenix (my great-niece nearly 5 as she keeps telling anyone who will listen) thinks BROCCOLI is a snack food.
