Top Tips For Protecting Pets This Bonfire Night

Although the pretty colours and tasty treats of Bonfire Night can be great fun for families, the bangs and flashes can be frightening for our pets and it's a good idea to be prepared.

Petplan, a company providing insurance for your loyal companions, understands how scary 5th November can be for them and they have therefore created several useful tips to help make our furry friends feel safe when the fireworks begin.

Our Border Collie, Spartan, is thankfully quite relaxed when it comes to outside noise (possibly because I have so many deliveries from couriers each day!) but I always ensure I'm home on Bonfire Night to comfort and reassure him if necessary. I feel that is quite an important part of being an responsible dog owner, even if that means altering our plans a little, but snuggles on the sofa with a hot chocolate is never a bad thing.

We take him for earlier walks in Autumn, as it gets darker a lot earlier, but it's definitely wise to ensure pets are indoors when the fireworks begin to prevent them becoming afraid. If you are near a display or have neighbours celebrating popping the TV or radio on may help to settle any nerves too.

Don't forget, if you're making a bonfire of your own take a peek under the branches before lighting it to make sure there aren't any hedgehogs or other animals hiding!

  1. Aw, your collie is just beautiful! Our dog always dislikes the noise of the fireworks. Just having someone around her, indoors helps so much x

  2. Spartan is beautiful. We have four cats and we draw the curtains, switch the tv up and have them all snuggled up with us in front of the fire. They don't react at all then. Great post and great tips. x

  6. My dog's weird. The first year she was ok but since then barks at the noises (even with loud music on) & seems mildly anxious unless she's out on a walk. I think she's trying to protect the house and garden now she knows they're hers but doesn't care when she's out and about!

  8. My old cat used to sit on the windowsill watching the fireworks! She was OK with it unless there was a very loud bang. I used to put loud music on all night to lessen the impact.

  12. Spartan is so cute! Since Hudson was a pup any time we've heard fireworks we act excited at the fireworks so he gets excited too & now he is nearly 12 years old whenever he hears fireworks he gets so happy & wants to stand out in the garden to watch them, he loves them!
