10 Family Friendly Things To Do In Northamptonshire This Half Term

It feels like just yesterday the Mini Mes were returning to school after Christmas but now that February has arrived the countdown to half term has officially begun. We are looking to stay local for this one and explore a bit more of Northamptonshire (as I mentioned wanting to do in our bucket list) so I've compiled a little list of ideas to keep the kids occupied - and what's even better is they are all free or low cost!

West Lodge Farm Park situated in Desborough has it's Lambing Festival between 15th and 23rd February. There are opportunities to bottle feed lambs several times a day and with over 100 ewes expecting to give birth it's possible you may even witness one being born! They also have piglet racing, animal handling and plenty of play equipment to enjoy. Tickets start at just £5.75 with carers and under 2's going free - great value for a day out!

If you're planning on a little retail therapy at Rushden Lakes you may wish to pop along to Nene Wetlands, only a minutes drive away, for their Winter Wonders Trail! For just £2 you can pick up a sheet for the family, have a stroll in the fresh air and collect your prize at the end if you spot everything listed. There are also bird feeder, bird box, twigs and willow weaving plus forest school events at the same location if you will be in the area frequently over the week.

Laser Zone in Northampton is ideal for those that are active and competitive. They have prices as low as £3.50 for a game this half term so there's no reason why you can't add a visit to your 'to do' list. This is a great place for the young and young at hearted - with loaded nachos and plenty of cake available in the cafe you may wish to stay for lunch too!

With early signs of spring and the weather improving, a day in the grounds of Canons Ashby might be worth adding to the agenda. This beautiful historic house teamed with a medieval church and gardens is ideallic for a family walk, especially with their Bugs and Beasties trail - just don't forget your wellies! They also have clay making for £1 and archeology handling on 21st if you fancy something a little different.

If you would like a wander around another stunning estate the Snowdrop event at Deene Park in Corby may be the one for you. With a variety of flowers to see, and even purchase, you can wrap up and explore the florals on 16th and 23rd before heading inside to warm up with some delicious refreshments. Under 16s are free to visit and adults are only £5 admission.

With their new parrot attraction and amazing deals on wristbands, Wicksteed Park in Kettering is a great place to head to. There are plenty of rides, mini golf and Laser Extreme for maximum fun and if the weather turns sour you can always head indoors for Clip 'n Climb or the Play Factory to burn off some energy.

If you prefer something a little more peaceful and the thought of bean bags and books are more appealing it's definitely worth visiting your local library. There are lots of craft activities planned with Hunsbury, Long Buckby, Daventry and Northampton Centre, to name a few, all having drop in events that are free or just 50p - £1 per child to get creative! You could go home with a masterpiece for the fridge, a spring bird, alien or even a snowman for the Frozen fans this Feb.

You may want to grab your popcorn or pick n mix and plan a trip to the cinema with Dolittle, Sonic the Hedgehog and Birds of Prey all showing. Tickets are only £5 per person at selected Vue locations every day but there are Mini Morning offers where both adults and children can book a seat for only £2.49 - perfect for early risers at the weekends.

For just £5 you can enjoy an hour and 45 minutes of roller skating at Kings Park Sports. There are 2 time slots available every day this half term and if you don't have wheeled boots of your own you can hire them for just £1 more. For working parents they also have a holiday camp for children aged 5-12 and for those looking for additional activities you might want to arrange a fencing or archery session.

If your little ones are adrenaline seekers then you may be interested to know that Jungle Parc at Irchester Country Park in Wellingborough reopens its gates on 15th February. For £14 they can take part in the Adventurer Course which includes over 50 activities and lasts around 2 hours. For a few pound more, older children can give the Xplorer version a go - a course suspended high in the tree canopy!

What are your plans this half term?
