Cress Heads {Creative Summer 6}

One of the things I love about the summer holiday is the lazy mornings. There are no alarms to set so I can go at whatever pace I like and enjoy a relaxed breakfast without any rush. When we have more time on our hands the Mini Mes often request pancakes or waffles when they get up, instead of cereal and toast, so with lots of egg shells available I thought that we could use a few for a nice little activity - especially as we received some cress seeds in the children's packs from Harvester during our recent review visit!

These cress heads are not only fun to create but they teach little ones about growing food at home.

Equipment
Egg shells (or yogurt pots if you prefer)
Googly eyes, stickers, pens - whatever you have available to decorate them
Cotton wool
Water
Cress Seeds

Method
  • Clean your egg shells thoroughly before use
  • Decorate the egg shell as you wish. We chose sequin moons as mouths and edible eyes
  • Dampen a piece of cotton wool with water and add one to each egg shell
  • Sprinkle the cress seeds on top then place in an egg cup on a windowsill

  • Watch as they grow over a few days ensuring the cotton wool remains damp but not too wet
  • When they get to around 5cm in length you can cut them and eat them

You should see that the seeds have sprouted within 24 hours. Cress grows really quickly so you will see the cress becoming hair for your character in just a few days.

Tips
- Get each child to decorate them differently so you can easily identify which is which
- Use the cress in an egg sandwich and go for a picnic
