5 Summer Ready To Roll Icing Cupcake Ideas

Summer is nearly here, and although the sunny weather hasn’t managed more than a sporadic showing it’s time to start getting ready for picnics and days at the beach. What better cakes to make for lazy summer days than cupcakes. Small, portable and oh-so tasty, cupcakes are great for including in picnic hampers and packed lunch boxes.

Here are 5 ideas for summer themed ready to roll icing cupcakes.

1. Bee Topper. What says summer more than the gentle buzzing of bees skipping from flower to flower. So why not create your own cute bumblebee topper. All you’ll need is some yellow, black and white ready to roll icing. Simply roll a flattened ball of yellow icing for the body and fix a few

Top 5 Family Destinations for the Summer Holidays 2015

Travelling abroad is one of life’s greatest experiences, but what’s even better is sharing it as a family. Holidaying together allows you to make life-long memories, see the world together, and create bonds that will last a lifetime. In order to ensure all of these things, you need to find a place that will be suited to everyone, from the babies to the grandparents. Due to this, a lot of people are now opting for boutique family holidays which guarantees an ideal adventure catering for all your needs and desires whilst abroad.

With summer is fast looming, you may not be sure where to go. Here is a quick guide to the top 5 summer holiday destinations 2015.

The Mini Mes in Kefalonia

Turkey
This is a European destination where families with children are very welcome with the locals being extremely friendly and helpful. Famous for its mud baths and delicious cuisine, Turkey also has a lot more to offer. If you are keen on history and architecture, the capital city Istanbul has an array of castles, palaces, and markets to visit, as well as trips on ferryboats to experience as a different mode of transport to the everyday walking and catching the bus.

Girls Summer Fashion from Melijoe

Although I'm a little disappointed the Easter holiday has now come to an end and the Mini Mes have returned to school, I'm still feeling rather content due to the endless sunshine that we seem to be having at the moment - I love it! It really reminds me of summers gone by which always bring thoughts of BBQs, afternoons in the garden and of course lazy days spent on the beach. The pace of living seems to slow down between July and September and everyone just seems so much happier, don't they.

With this in mind I started to think about how unprepared I actually am for the warmer weather, and our holidays abroad, as our wardrobes are some what lacking in suitable summer fashion! Minxy in particular has had a bit of a growth spurt recently so I soon found myself browsing Melijoe for some key designer pieces.

I put together these three lovely outfits...

Summer Fashion from Melijoe

I selected the Rykiel Enfant Flared printed cotton poplin skirt as it is a piece that Minxy could wear all year round. It goes perfectly with the pretty Pom d'Api sandals but at the same time she could team this with some tights and boots when Autumn arrives. Being black and white it would go well with a lot of her existing clothing and the Liu Jo top I've teamed it with is such a lovely deep shade of fuschia and a style that can be both dressed up or down for any occasion making it very versatile.

A Hassle-Free Holiday With APH

There is nothing quite like packing a suitcase, getting a flight to somewhere hot with beautiful views and enjoying a well deserved break from the norm. The Mini Mes are in their element on a sandy beach and I am never as relaxed as I am when sat beside a pool, palm trees swaying in the warm breeze while sipping a cocktail (or two!) before sneaking off to scoff the all inclusive buffet. Getting to and from our destination always seems to be a bit of a mission though, something that would give Ethan Hunt a run for his money! With heavy bags and hand luggage, coats and important documents to hand the last thing you really want to do is drop your car off miles away, wait around for a bus and then struggle to get everything onboard (and off again) before arriving at the airport.
It would be much easier to drive straight there and jump out wouldn't it.

Summer Fashion For You And Your Mini Me: 5 Key Pieces For Both Of You

The years when your little ones are happy to wear whatever you pick out for them from the wardrobe that morning are all too quickly over. Soon, they’re as opinionated about their outfits as they are about what they will and won’t eat and which toys they’re happy to share with their brother or sister. But, there are some trends this summer which should keep both mum and even the most ardent little fashionista happy. Here are some of the best pieces this season:

The colourful loafer

Ballet pumps have been the flat of choice for seasons, but the tide seems to be turning in favour of the loafer. Once the preserve of the sloany set, the loafer has had something of a fashion make-over. It’s

Foodie Friday - Currently Coveting

I've had the opportunity to try some lovely products over the past few weeks that have been ideal for the lazy days in the garden and picnics in the sunshine; two highlights of our summer. As the weather remains warm, even with Autumn on the horizon, it may be worth popping one of these in your shopping trolley to try too...

These were an instant hit with the Mini Mes as they are packed with flavour and for me they were a lovely treat that left me feeling a little nostalgic. The Sherbet Lemon, Orange and Lime was an overall favourite as the sweet yet sharp taste was perfectly balanced. I was pleasantly surprised that they were low in calories and I would happily take these for days out to share as the screw top lid made resealing the cartons easy.

The packaging had some great puzzles to complete once the drink was consumed to keep everyone entertained too.

I'm not a big tea drinker but when I do have a mug it is more often than not Tetley and both camomile and peppermint tea are a great way to calm you down when the kids are driving you insane things are a little hectic. Naturally caffeine free, these are both a great option in the evening as they won't keep you up all night!

The peppermint version is ideal for after meals to aid digestion whereas the camomile should help you unwind and relax - I found that I actually prefer the peppermint version to original teabags.

Summer wouldn't be complete without cooling desserts and despite preferring rich chocolate flavours this is by far the best vanilla ice cream I've tried to date. It's thick and creamy and very easy to scoop into bowls or onto cones PLUS with only 125 calories per serving I didn't feel guilty indulging!

The Mr in particular is very fond of this and has even purchased more since our first tub was eaten. It was delicious with wild berries and some strawberries that we even managed to grow ourselves!

Not only are these great for lunch boxes but the individual triangles are ideal for those calorie counting like myself as they save time measuring out portions! I'm a big cheese fan and the flavour combinations of these were really nice on toast, crackers and even scooped up onto crisps. I found the flavour quite mild but you could still definitely identify the Emmental and Blue Cheese within them. It was nice that they weren't overpowering as the Mini Mes therefore appreciated them too.
I would definitely purchase these in the future.

The Chill Factor Squeeze Cup was a huge hit over the summer holiday as they transform every drink into slush helping to keep the little ones cool. We experimented with squash, fizzy drinks and even a few alcoholic beverages and found it worked every time, quickly and easily. The cup itself goes into the freezer and once frozen you can add your chosen drink, squeeze the cup and almost instantly can see the ice forming in your drink. Each comes with a reusable straw with a scooped end -  a great idea!

Lollibop - Family Fun

After a wonderful time at Lollibop last year we were excited to be attending again this summer but at the new location of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and as an Ambassador for the event!

We parked with ease at Westfield Shopping Centre where parking was only £5 for the entire day and we walked from there to the main entrance. There were staff on hand to guide you and it only took about 10 minutes for us to reach the venue of the 'Big Bash for Little People'.

We arrived at 9.40, surprisingly early and organised for me after travelling for over 2 hours, and waited at the very front to be allowed in at 10am. When the gates opened we collected our wristbands and headed straight for the Skylanders section as Jamster is a big fan and was keen to try the new Swap Force Game, stopping to meet some interesting characters along the way.

The Skylanders area ended up being a favourite as not only did it have the option to play the new game with swappable figures, it had colouring, a photo opportunity and competitions to take part in too. It was also quite large so you didn't feel cramped despite the crowds forming and we picked up some great goodie bags containing Skylanders Giants, stickers and posters.

After receiving lots of Haribo sweets and meeting the bear himself we stopped off at the main stage to see Poppy the Cat. The shows throughout the day were really good and kept the children entertained, with Justin Fletcher and Dick and Dom being favourites. I felt the stage being to the rear of the park was a good idea as it meant there was plenty of space elsewhere when the favourite acts were on and there was the option to see the smaller and quieter stages throughout the venue also.

Queues were building fast from around midday so we decided to prioritise what we wanted to do and after a quick stop to see Optimus Prime and a few street performers, including balloon modellers and bubble makers, we went to Lalaloopsy Land. I felt this was a very well organised area with plenty of seating to take a well needed sit down - including a TV and bean bags. Children were able to make masks, had the opportunity to meet and greet a character and received some wonderful goodie bags with headbands and toys inside.

Next door the Cloudbabies were on stage so we danced and sang along with them until we decided it was time for some lunch. I was pleased with the variety of food and drink available which included toasties, chicken, paella and hot dogs although we had a picnic and took advantage of the tables that were plotted about. The adult creche (a bar) was a nice touch too!

After filling up on rolls, fresh fruit, savoury nibbles and sweet treats we decided to have a go at the many craft activities that were spread out around Lollibop. Parentdish provided bandanas and stamps to create your own design on which the Mini Mes really enjoyed. There was also bunting colouring and rubber duck decorating too.

There were many samples being handed out and the Mr enjoyed a delicious peach Chobani yogurt while the Mini Mes were met Barny and the Bear which included free cereal boxes and cakes. Barny also had an interesting interactive wall, some puzzle sheets and a variety of plants and magnifying glasses to get a little ones a little closer to nature.

Over at the Science tent there were plenty of hands on activities although the tent at this point was packed so we decided to move along quickly to the National Geographical Kids area. Minxy and Jamster completed a sensory activity, involving placing their hands inside sealed boxes to receive stickers, and they also got to touch a snake! It was the chance to get involved with things like this and the graffiti wall that were ideal for tweens or older children in particular although there was lots for babies and toddlers with WOW Toys and Little Tikes play areas plus reading hubs and LEGO Duplo.

We visited the River Island tent a few times throughout the day but unfortunately we were unable to take part with t-shirt decorating; at first due to health and safety and damage to the tent and then because the queue was around an hour long wait which we didn't really want to hang about for. We did however love the outfits that the Mini Mes received to wear for the event which are featured in all of their photos!

We headed to the VIP area (a really nice tent with face painting available, separate toilets, seating and sweets) throughout the day to meet various characters including the WotWots and Hello Kitty. There were other opportunities available throughout the park to meet Postman Pat, Peppa Pig and the Cloud Babies too but as queues were unfortunately quite long at times we skipped a few although we still managed to meet quite a lot of family favourites...

We finally left the park around 3pm after having fun cake decorating, getting body art, chilling out in the huge Heart deck chairs, watching Titan the Robot, colouring postcards and pictures with Magic Belles and viewing some of the stalls. We all agreed that we had a lovely day but felt the event was a little overcrowded this year making queues rather long, which children often don't appreciate. We will definitely go along next year though as we really enjoy Lollibop as a family festival and there is plenty to fill a day or more.

Good bits
Good location in relation to parking and public transport
Variety of character meet and greets
 Variety and quality of shows
Crafts
Lots of toilets (we never needed to queue)
Lots of food and drink available
Covered areas and benches for picnics
Free samples and goodie bags
Lots for toddlers

Not So Good Bits
Large queues at times
Lack of hand washing facilities/hand gel
Some areas too small for the audience
Map didn't list stalls or food locations

*We received tickets to the event for the purpose of this review and as a Lollibop Ambassador. The opinions given are honest and our own*

Step by Step with Dora (and your chance to win!)

Watching your child grow and develop into a little person full of personality is something to be proud of as a parent, but it can be a little overwhelming at times. Nick Jr. has created a new initiative called Step-by-Step which assists parents and explains the key developmental milestones and rewards children once they reach them.

From the daily tasks of teeth brushing to things like learning to ride a bike Nick Jr. and Dora are there to help! They understand no child is the same so they are asking parents to share their tips in the Dora Step-by-Step Top Tip Swap.

Each month there is a new topic will be covered online and there will be plenty of information, videos and downloadable tools to help and also practical tips from Jacqueline Harding, child development expert.
Parents are able to share their own tips on the Facebook page for the chance to win a Dora Step-by-Step pack consisting of a Dora-the-Explorer My Talking Backpack and a School Day Dora doll!

August’s theme is ‘Summer’ and here are a few tips that I have to offer as a parent...

  • The summer is the perfect time to make the most of the outdoors so head to the park and practise your climbing; up trees and along fallen branches, both of which are great for developing balance and coordination skills. Be there to support your little one but see how much they can do themselves too. It will give them a real sense of achievement.
  • Whether in the paddling pool or bath tub have fun with water. Pouring it and blowing bubbles can eliminate any fear and teaches them about cause and effect in the process.
  • If you are heading to the beach don't forget to pack the bucket and spade. Not only can you build some super size castles but it's a great way to learn about the sea and the life in and around it. Rock pooling is a fun yet educational activity, praise your children if they manage to find a creature and handle it.

What tips do you have to share?

7 Low Cost Activities for Summer Family Fun

A few weeks in to the summer holidays and no doubt our pockets are a little lighter as the pennies are being spent to entertain the little people in our lives! But panic not, as there are so many free (or virtually) activities that will keep you busy without breaking the bank - not every day has to be expensive!

Forests
Den building, bug hunting and tree climbing are just a few things you can do at your local forest. With the option to stay overnight with camping and forest breaks now available, you can extend your day out even further.
Check out the Forestry Commission website for more details - with prices starting at £7.70 per night you can book a mini adventure! (There is also the chance to win a break with the Guardian).

Libraries
Over the past few years we have joined in with the summer reading challenges where you gain stickers, a certificate and medal for your achievements (reading 6 books over the 6 weeks). The scheme is running again this year so check out some books and gain your rewards when you return them. It's a super way to encourage reading too!

Cinemas
The usual price of a ticket, food and drink may cost a small fortune but this is a great time to take advantage of the early bird morning and weekend deals. With tickets from just £1 you have a bargain trip out and if you take some snacks in too it kills a few hours without denting your purse.

Water parks
You may have been to your local park a million times by now so try to venture a little further afield and look for new places to visit, especially ones with water play. Pack a picnic and towels and make the most of the sunshine in your swimwear, splashing about as the water jets cool you down.

Free swimming
Our local gym has several open days over the summer offering free entertainment and sports to children and this even includes free swimming. Check your local one for more details and to book your places today.
We have already enjoyed inflatable play at ours this summer!

Churches
Many churches offer some great free craft groups which allow your little ones to get creative and it saves your carpet from glitter and sequins galore in the process! Some also have the option to leave your children for a few mornings giving you the perfect opportunity to take a well deserved sit down.

Geocaching
This is treasure hunting on a larger scale where you seek out containers or 'caches' using GPS. It's a great way to explore your local area and to get active. We have downloaded an app to find ones nearby but you can have a look on the geocaching website for more details too.

Family Fun - Camping

Until I met the Mr I had never been camping. The thought of bugs and mud never really appealed but back in 2010 he convinced me to give it a go and I've never looked back; we have had many breaks as a couple and as an entire family too, and we now have a wide selection of tents and equipment!

My first time camping 2010

We went to Derbyshire last week for a few nights, and stayed at a lovely campsite named Pack Horse Farm, not far from Matlock. I tend to go for smaller, quieter sites and avoid those with evening entertainment and swimming pools as I like to enjoy nature and the peaceful environment, so this was perfect.

We arrived on Tuesday afternoon and set up our tent before heading off to the local supermarket for some food and drink. I was pleasantly surprised by just how quiet the site was, especially being the summer holiday, and by how much space there was to play!

Our Vango Kasari 800.

Camping is the perfect opportunity to leave technology behind and enjoy the simple things in life. It also makes you appreciate what you do have when you return home!

Apart from our trips to Chatsworth House, Gulliver's Kingdom and Spy Zone plus a day at Conkers we had plenty of time for family fun on the camp site.

Water fights...

Talking, being silly and playing charades...

Playing cards...

If you are thinking about camping as a family this summer here are a few tips that should help to make your experience enjoyable and as stress-free as possible:

Erecting your tent - Read through the instructions and ensure everything is in the bag before you leave home. Attempting to set up a tent when you don't know what you are doing or with pegs missing isn't going to be fun! Also try to get to the site while it's still light so you can see well to assemble it and don't forget a mallet.

Comfort - Sleeping bags will keep you warm but it's not particularly comfortable laying on the ground. Inflatable beds are a great base for your sleeping bags to go on.... don't forget the pump!

Weather - The weather can be unpredictable and being outdoors you can get cold or hot very easily. Pack a variety of clothing and include both sun lotion and waterproofs/coats so you are prepared. Pack pillows and blankets too if there is space in the car to do so.

Hygiene - Although you may have access to toilets and showers, taking anti bacterial hand spray and wipes is always useful.

A lot of people I've spoken to that haven't been camping before say they are concerned by the cleanliness of facilities and lack of privacy but there are some great sites available. I would recommend reading reviews of where you are travelling to to in advance.

Shower cubicles at Pack Horse Farm - lockable doors and lots of hot water!
